Like many moms, you may have (at one point or another) considered getting involved in network marketing. It’s tempting to jump on the bandwagon after you see your friends share stories of women who have gotten rich this way. But as the old saying goes: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. First of all, how much could you realistically earn in network marketing? And how can you predict whether you’ll be successful? I interviewed a few moms who are putting some serious time and effort into their businesses. I asked them about their money, time, challenges, and more. Here, 3 moms share their network marketing secrets with us.
Hold On… What’s Network Marketing?
If you’re asking yourself, “what’s network marketing?”, think Beach Body, Mary Kay, Lularoe, Plexus… the list goes on and on. And on and on… and on. Network marketing is an umbrella term for companies that use independent representatives to sell products. Chances are good that one of your girlfriends has suggested it to you or, at the very least, added you to a virtual “party” of sorts.

ABOUT THE COMPANY: doTERRA sources, tests, manufactures and distributes CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® essential oils and essential oil products to over eight million doTERRA Wellness Advocates and customers.
Christy has been a Wellness Advocate with doTERRA for around 5 years. She estimates that she spends 15-19 hours each week on her business. According to Christy, most women can “make it” in network marketing. “I truly believe with the right product and an upline who can train and support them, anyone can be successful in network marketing with consistent effort,” she said. “The only difference between someone brand new and the people at the top ranks in your company are the time that you’ve been doing it!”
But that doesn’t mean network marketing is easy. In fact, there are a few personality traits that make succeeding in this business pretty tough. “They’re the same personality traits that would make someone a bad candidate for any job,” Christy explained. “I have people on my team who never imagined they could be successful in network marketing. Through personal development, commitment and a little bit of faith, they have surprised themselves with the success they’ve created!” She confessed that simply being her own boss has been her biggest challenge. “No one is telling you what to do or when to do it,” she said. “Your success is 100% up to you.”
“I made a list of my friends and family that I thought would be interested in essential oils and/or the business opportunity,” Christy said. “I sent a lot of texts messages and messages on Facebook Messenger sharing how essentials oils were helping our family deal with a variety of health issues and asked if there was anything they’d like to try. This is actually what I still do!”
Does Network Marketing Pay?
I asked the experts about their income but I didn’t ask for specific numbers. For one thing, that’s really personal. But most importantly, money is relative. This means that what one expert considers to be a good salary might be vastly different from the salary you’d be happy with. Instead, I asked how their network marketing income compares to what they’d expect to earn at a more traditional job. Christy estimates she makes 100% of what she’d make at a full-time job even though she works part-time hours. She adds that with continued effort, she knows she can make 10 times that!

ABOUT THE COMPANY: OPTAVIA sells prepackaged food designed to improve health and help clients lose weight. The plan focuses on healthy habits, pairing clients up with coaches to increase the chances of success.
Like Christy, Audra says she earns 80% or more of what she could earn at a traditional job. She’s been in network marketing for a couple of years now, and got started by opening up about her own journey. “I shared my story of transformation with all of my friends and family. I started helping them feel like I did and connected them with a supportive community and the right nutrition for their health goals,” she said.
How Much Time Does It Take?
Audra estimates she spends 20-24 hours each week on her coaching business. “I’ve really loved connecting with people and building relationships,” she said. Audra thinks her biggest challenge has been limiting beliefs, but she’s working to overcome them. “I have been surrounded by personal growth opportunities that continue to make me a better coach and leader,” she said.
What kind of person does Audra think will succeed in this business? “I love to partner with busy people who are looking for more in their life. They know how to get things done, they have great relationships with friends and family, and they are ready to learn and grow in themselves.” However, she cautioned that not everyone is a good fit. “A great network marketer is a self starter and organized. Without those traits, this business can be a challenge.”
“I Keep Going and I Have Fun” With My Network Marketing Business

ABOUT THE COMPANY: Younique sells makeup and skincare through its network of “presenters.” According to the website, Younique is the first direct sales company to market and sell almost exclusively through social media.
Dane has a few years of network marketing under her belt, having worked with Younique and another direct sales company. To get her Younique business going, Dane said she “worked [her] butt off.’ She went on to say she “showed up every day, went live on Facebook, showed how to apply makeup, shared tips and tricks, had fun, and shared some amazing products.”
Dane said she spends about 15-19 hours each week marketing Younique products. She divulged that she hasn’t yet earned enough to replace her old salary, but the extra cash helps with bills. Plus, it gives her family some “fun money.” She said that to succeed in network marketing, you have to be “someone that likes to take risks.” Her advice? “Go in scared and do it anyway.” She added that you have to be “willing to work hard but have so much fun! Go out and give value while being genuine.”
Her Biggest Challenge
Dane doesn’t think network marketing is right for everyone. “Someone who isn’t motivated, who doesn’t want to grow and be a leader, or who is afraid to share life with social media,” probably isn’t cut out for this business. Her biggest challenge, she said, is “getting out of my head. It’s not always easy. There are great months and months where I barely make a sale. But I keep going and have fun!”

There is a chance you’ll do well in network marketing, but there’s also a big chance you won’t. The truth is that some women are cut out for the businesses and some are not. Based on the network marketing secrets these 3 moms shared, here’s what you need:
